Our Values
Sound medicine is based on good scientific research. Excellent medical advice should rely, whenever possible, on published medical data. Good veterinarians take the time to review the current medical literature and use that information to enlighten their clients. This is the basis of evidence-based medicine.
The other core value of Veremedy is the full utilization of the principles of informed consent. Dr. Burrington not only believes in the ethical importance of outlining all medical options for a patient, he further believes that it has legal implications as well. An excellent source of guidelines for informed consent has been outlined by the American Medical Association. (If it is good enough for a human, why not use it for pets?) These guidelines help to govern Veremedy’s informed-consent policies.
At its core, informed consent recognizes that there is no single-best way to treat many of the illnesses from which humans and pets suffer. Everyone has a different approach to health care and a different comfort level with risk and medical procedures. In some instances, there are budgetary considerations that need to be addressed. By creating a company that is obsessed about the quality of the information used to drive medical decisions, we are changing the playing field for pet care one case at a time, and the pets are winning.
As to other values held dear at Veremedy, they all revolve around the way we execute our passion for the first two values; namely, a firm belief in the following: an effective team is greater than the sum of its parts, and an understanding that everyone makes mistakes and those mistakes should only be looked at as learning tools. Dr. Burrington is fond of saying, “Don’t get bitter; get better.” Successful companies need to help their local communities by giving back well-paid and well-cared-for employees, and by caring for those members of the community who may have fallen on hard times.
